Response from BC Health Protection Branch re: letters supporting a GE Free BC

Response from BC Health Protection Branch re: letters supporting a GE Free BC

Dear Ms. Cheu:

Thank you for your letter and the accompanying 31 letters, received here on January 22, 2014, regarding legislation to prohibit genetically engineered (GE) plants and animals in BC. The Honourable Terry Lake, Minister of Health, has forwarded the letters to me, and I am responding on his behalf.

The Ministry of Health (the Ministry) is responsible for ensuring food safety in BC as it relates to food processing, food service and retail. The Ministry also recognizes the importance of on-farm food safety to support safe and healthy food for British Columbians. A single province such as BC would face significant challenges in legislating and enforcing a prohibition on GE plants and animals that is not required elsewhere in Canada, given the implications for inter-provincial and international trade.

To ensure consistent standards across Canada, a prohibition on GE plants and animals would be most effectively addressed under federal legislation. Since Health Canada is responsible for assessing the safety of GE foods (categorized as a “novel food”) that are proposed for sale in Canada through the Food and Drug Regulations of the Food and Drugs Act, Health Canada would be the most appropriate department to contact regarding a prohibition on GE plants and animals across Canada.

Please be assured that the Ministry supports and continuously monitors transparent and evidence-based research into the health effects of GE foods. As was acknowledged in the 2005 BC Provincial Health Officer’s Annual Report, GE products may have the potential to make food more nutritious or food production more efficient or economical; however, they may also pose potential risks. You can review the Provincial Health Officer’s Report at: http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/pho/pdf/phoannual2005.pdf.

If you have further concerns regarding GE foods, you can contact Health Canada’s Bureau of Microbial Hazards at: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/contact/fn-an/hpfb-dgpsa/bmh-bdm-eng.php, or by email at: bmh_bdm@hc-sc.gc.ca.

Thank you again for writing and expressing your concerns. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

Yours truly,

Tim Lambert, PhD

GM apple campaign: rotten to the core | GE Free BC

Help us stop the genetically engineered apple being developed in the Okanagan by Okanagan Specialty Fruits.

This is an apple being genetically engineered so it doesn’t go brown for 15 days. All municipalities in BC, the BC Fruit Growers’ Association, organic apple growers, and even McDonalds and Gerber in the U.S. have said they don’t want the genetically engineered (or GM for genetically modified) apple.

New Studies Reveal Damaging Effects of Glyphosate

New Studies Reveal Damaging Effects of Glyphosate

Increasing exposure to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, may be at least partially to blame for rising rates of numerous chronic diseases in Westernized societies, according to recent research.

The finding, published in Entropy,1 has ramifications for virtually every man, woman and child in developed nations, as this pesticide is widely used on both conventional and, especially, genetically modified (GM) crops (to the tune of more than one billion pounds sprayed in the US alone).

If you eat processed foods, most of which are made with GM corn and soy ingredients, you’re consuming glyphosate residues, probably in each and every bite. Knowing this, and the fact that tests show people in 18 countries across Europe already have glyphosate in their bodies,2 the following news should leave you very, very concerned… if not compelled to take action against this health-endangering chemical.

GMO – The World According To Monsanto Full Length Video

There’s nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it — it’s strategic. It’s more powerful than bombs. It’s more powerful than guns. This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting disproportionate influence over policymakers via the “revolving door”. One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company’s vice president for public policy.

Thanks to these intimate links between Monsanto and government agencies, the US adopted GE foods and crops without proper testing, without consumer labeling and in spite of serious questions hanging over their safety. Not coincidentally, Monsanto supplies 90 percent of the GE seeds used by the US market. Monsanto’s long arm stretched so far that, in the early nineties, the US Food and Drugs Agency even ignored warnings of their own scientists, who were cautioning that GE crops could cause negative health effects. Other tactics the company uses to stifle concerns about their products include misleading advertising, bribery and concealing scientific evidence.
