GE Free CV has started this petition “ Stop Broad, Non-Selective Herbicide Spraying by BC Hydro Comox Valley” and hope you can add your name to this petition.

In early Feb 2016,BC Hydro put British Columbians on notice that they have been given a licence to spray 2 4D and other herbicides in BC and Comox Valley is on their list.

Our team  reviewed the 2016 Hydro Integrated Vegetation Management Plan (IVMP) and found that we need to propose an alternative to Hydro.

We noted that other petitions cited glyphosate and other herbicides. However we know that other more powerful herbicides are coming on stream. Our alternative is:

Therefore, we ask BC Hydro to adopt Best Practices of mechanical removal (with only very selective, plant specific herbicide treatment) , followed by an extensive, native, low-growing species reintroduction program.
Our goal is to reach 100 signatures  this week.

I think there is already a bylaw in the Comox Valley which prevents the usage of herbicide spraying but unfortunately, I was told by the City of Courtenay, that there is only one bylaw officer for the whole town! And if you go to any Home Depot, Canadian Tire, etc. you can easily find herbicides on the shelves! So anyone can buy the stuff, they’ll even counsel you on how to use it but you’re not allowed to spray it?! What a ridiculous bylaw when it’s not enforced. Get it off the shelves! BC Hydro should also respect our bylaws. The WHO has stated that glyphosate probably causes cancer. It’s in mother’s milk, baby’s core blood, our waterways and our air. Surely there must be some alternative to supporting Monsanto’s toxic herbicides.

      Thank you for your observations.
The Courtenay Bylaw is for the cosmetic use of Pesticide on residential land and as you noted, it is not enforced. There is NO bylaw for the Commercial Agricultural use of herbicides and pesticides. BC Hydro is yet in another class.
Humans can invent many ways to circumvent Man Made laws but we cannot avoid the Natural Law of Evolution. Super weeds will adapt to new chemicals and the loop never ends.
Our petition is asking Hydro to get out of this loop.
Stop broad, non specific spraying. It will take time to implement this new regime but in the long run, it will be more beneficial to the soil, the bugs, all other life forms, the air and the water ,also more economical for Hydro.

Please, stop the broad and non-selective spraying of herbicides in the Comox Valley.

BC Hydra has received plans for other options of ways to handle this problem that will not damage our lives much.

I have family who live there, even thoughy e-mail address will show I currently live near Cranbrook, BC
